Three Benefits Of Sparring In MMA Kickboxing

Why does martial arts training include sparring? Sparring is really just another word for fighting, isn’t it?

Not really.

Everyone knows that mixed martial arts (MMA) is absolutely great for functional fitness training and essential for developing everyday skills like discipline, focus, confidence, self-protection, and a powerfully positive mindset.

But at Invictus Martial Arts, we know that you want to do more than just feel good about your training, you want to feel resilient, adaptable, powerful. But in order to do that, you need need to know the coaching and mentoring you receive isn’t just good in theory but proven to help you achieve your goals. The problem is you don’t exactly know how to get it— you know, how to really dial-up the intensity with control whenever you need it. Additionally, what role does sparring play in really help you achieve your goals? This, of course, makes you feel unsure about how to approach sparring and maybe even feel a bit vulnerable to life’s uncertainties.

Fortunately, we believe in giving practical, proven tips-and-tricks to help you develop mental toughness and emotional resiliency through safe and effective sparring techniques. And we understand that safety is important to you which is why we not only educate you on sparring best practices but also allow for progressive skill advancement drills to help you feel confident while you’re developing essential martial arts skills.

Let’s take a look at how we do it…

1. Learning Environment

At Invictus, we believe that sparring is a learning environment where we get to try out our techniques with a resistant partner for the sake of mutual betterment and personal growth. This means that we can confidently know that our sparring partner is there to help us and not harm us. This understanding and agreement allow us to try out our skills in a growth-minded culture knowing we’re getting better, together. Of course, this makes sparring fun while also encouraging experimentation and improvement feedback.

2. Cognitive Flexibility

One of the lesser-known benefits of sparring is this: being able to think “outside the box.” Combinations (short and long forms of individual movements), technical and performance drills, and equipment techniques are often memorized patterns that help develop muscle memory for almost instinct-like responsiveness which is great for self-protection and performance. As good as all that is (and it really is the best), sparring takes it even further and reinforces neuroplasticity. This crucial adaptability allows you to see things from a different perspective encouraging you to adjust to changing environmental stimuli. Many people believe that this can help with achieving the much sought-after “flow state” and experience shows that it always helps a person develop increased mental toughness and improved emotional resiliency. After all, who doesn’t want more of that?

3. Adrenalized Control

The ability to manage and mitigate adrenaline and cortisol stress is a critical skill to develop for self-protection and much needed in today’s frenzied life. Fortunately, sparring affords you the opportunity to experience both in a safe and controlled environment. Nothing can ever truly prepare you for the unexpected. However, it is possible to train for chaos and, in fact, sparring does just that. The adrenaline and cortisol dump that occurs in your body when triggered by a stress-related event creates a cascade of minor motor deficiencies making typically normal movements more challenging to execute with precision. Controlled breathing, hand-eye coordination, muscular endurance, cardiovascular durability, and total-body proprioception are just a few of the excellent benefits you can readily achieve when training in an adrenaline-controlled environment. Luckily, sparring helps give you upgraded self-discipline and equips you with the tools you need to successfully navigate through the stresses of everyday life. In other words, you manage life better.

Sparring is more than just sweating and smiling; it’s learning, it’s collaborative, and best of all, it’s confidence-building. So, we invite you to take your first step today and schedule a FREE Private Consultation with us. We would love to get to know more about you and partner with you to help you achieve your goals!

Stay Safe: Why Learning Self-Defense Isn’t Enough

“Stay safe” has become one of the most popular sentiments recently offered to friends and family alike. But how often do we consider exactly what that means?

Everyone wants to experience the comfort of knowing that they are doing everything they can to protect themselves and the ones they love. But how can we take action to ensure that is true? An obvious answer would be to take a self-defense class to learn some basic techniques. Most people would consider this is a great solution. Unfortunately, experts agree that a person who attends a single self-defense class is no more prepared to protect themselves against targeted violence than a person who has no training at all.

Surprised? Here’s how we think about it…

Self-Defense Is Reactive

Self-defense is used in response to an unprovoked attack. This means that, by definition, self-defense is reactionary. Unfortunately, reacting appropriately to an attack isn’t as easy as the movies may portray. When a person feels threatened, fine motor skills are compromised and critical thinking is challenged due to a spike in adrenaline. It is extremely rare that a person will “rise to the occasion” and successfully ward off an attack with ease. What’s more likely, in fact, is that a person will default to the level of their training, especially under the influence of adrenaline stress. Often, the best self-defense moves are simple, fast, and easy to recall. Understandably, any self-defense techniques must be consistently practiced to be utilized successfully.

Comprehensive training is critical to being prepared to save a life. The American Heart Association requires at least four hours of CPR training in order to be considered certified to practice this life-saving activity successfully. Likewise, investing several hours a year in training how to properly defend yourself in the event of a violent attack is imperative.

A common misconception is that once you’ve successfully defended yourself and escaped the violent encounter, it’s over. However, it’s important to consider the legal, ethical, and moral implications of using self-defense. Because of this, understanding reasonable force and developing self-control through continuous training is absolutely critical.

Self-Protection Is Proactive

At Invictus Martial Arts, we educate our members on the importance of understanding the distinction between self-defense and self-protection. Unlike self-defense, an attack does not have to occur in order to practice self-protection, making it proactive. For example, we’ve all applied protective sunscreen before hitting the beach, right? Of course! There are ways to proactively stay safe before a threat of violence presents itself.

It all starts with informed awareness. Becoming more situationally aware is a great first step. Most of us have heard well-intending people advise us not to leave our drink unattended at a party or to always travel in (at least) pairs. We wholeheartedly agree! However, a person with violent intent isn’t limited to a stranger in a bar. Acts of violence can happen anytime, anywhere, and in any location. In fact, victims of violence are often attacked in a familiar place by someone they know. Yes, you read that correctly! Most victims KNOW their attacker. Learning to identify potentially violent behavior can also help you avoid becoming a target.

An Undefeated Mindset

Ultimately, staying safe starts with developing an undefeated mindset. We’ve all known someone who has passionately exclaimed, “if it ever came down to it, I would die for my child/spouse/family member/friend.” Perhaps you have even personally uttered this sentiment. Realistically, if you ever found yourself in a life-threatening situation with your loved one, making the decision to lay down your own life will not protect them. We’ve likely all heard our flight attendants remind us, “in the event that the cabin loses air pressure, place the oxygen mask on yourself before helping the person next to you”. You serve your loved ones best when you make the decision to protect yourself first.

Former Green Beret Sniper, Army Ranger, and Retired UFC Fighter, Tim Kennedy says, “Every time you train, train with the motivation and purpose that you will be the hardest person someone ever tries to kill.” Coupling self-protection strategies with consistent self-defense training helps develop an undefeated mindset making you feel prepared, confident, and safe.

Martial Arts Fitness Could Extend Your Life… And Just Might Save It

Everyone knows someone who’s made a New Year’s resolution to get healthy, right? Of course! We all have. In fact, everyone could always use to feel better, wouldn’t you agree? Luckily, martial arts fitness could extend your life… and just might save it!

At Invictus, we know that you want to be healthy and strong! We also know that in order to do that, you need to feel confident that the choices you’re making today will not only support your goals now but also help you in the long term… and perhaps even extend your life!

The problem is you’re not even really sure if you’re on the right track or even where to begin to make that positive change. Sadly, this can make you feel doubtful that you’re truly making the right decision for you to accomplish your wellness goals.

We believe that self-care doesn’t have to be self-ish and that a person really can make progress on achieving their health and fitness goals with the right support from the right coaches. And best of all, you can start today. We understand that it requires more than just a simple wish to improve and that it will take dedication and consistent effort which is why we always do our best to not only educate our members on their options but also coach and support their goals every step of the way.

Here’s how we do it…

EDUCATION

The Cooper Institute in Dallas Texas & University of Texas Southwestern Medical School studied 66,000 participants and found some surprising results. People who exhibited exceptional health and fitness had the following in common:

Men aged 50 -> run a mile in 8:00 or less
Women aged 50 -> run a mile in 9:00 or less

However, when a person couldn’t break a 12-minute mile for men or a 15-minute mile for women then they were considered low fitness and high-risk for a shortened life span and other chronic diseases.

Dr. Bary, a Cardiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas says, “If you are fit in mid-life, you double your chance of living to 85.”

Furthermore, a 10-year Harvard study of 1,000 healthy firefighters reveals that a person 40 years old who can perform 40 push-ups is 96% less likely to develop a cardiovascular problem than one who can’t do 10.

Fortunately for members of Invictus, we regularly practice push-ups at all ages and at all ranks and levels giving you the support you need to strengthen your cardiovascular health. You can be confident knowing that Invictus coaches and instructors always make sure to invest time and effort into your durability and strength to help you live your best life now.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

We get it. This may be an uncomfortable conversation right now and we’ve had to deal with it too. But the way we see it, we can ignore the truth, deny the truth, or accept the truth. At Invictus, we have decided to deal with reality but refuse to be defined by it. We also understand that data is simply information. So, let’s take a look at the information impacting our health and wellness today.

From the CDC…

  • 71.6% of adults aged 20 and over are overweight (this includes obesity)
  • 20.6%  of adolescents aged 12-19 years are obese
  • 18.4% of children aged 6-11 years are obese
  • 13.9% of children aged 2-5 years are obese

Sadly, more than 2/3 of the American population is overweight or obese with almost half of all Americans falling into the obese range. Yes, it’s shocking and sobering. That means about 1 in 2 (or almost 150 million) of us are in this category. Did you know a person who is 5’9″ and weighs more than 170 lbs is considered overweight? Furthermore, a person 5’9″ and weighing more than 205 lbs is considered obese (see chart below).

Unsurprisingly, obesity is also linked to impaired immune function. Based on a meta-analysis study of 399,000 patients, “people with obesity who contracted SARS-CoV-2 were 113% more likely than people of healthy weight to land in the hospital, 74% more likely to be admitted to an ICU, and 48% more likely to die.”

In fact, most of us regularly hear these days how someone seemed perfectly healthy but then got severely sick and then struggled to recover from their illness.  We’re not going to say that they weren’t seemingly healthy because perhaps they did appear to be doing okay but what we will say is that the most common health problems that develop due to obesity are: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, some cancers, dyslipidemia, and stroke. Most of which have also been proven to contribute to a weakened immune system and a higher likelihood of mortality due to certain viral infections.

Thankfully, experts agree that regular fitness activity, like the martial arts training members at Invictus receive, has been shown to reduce- and in some instances, reverse- the comorbid effects of obesity. This is why we believe that martial arts fitness could extend your life… and just might save it! One member shared with us, “I’ve lost over 20 pounds and at least a couple of inches on my waistline. I have more energy and focus…” With results like that, why wait?

SUPPORT

This all sounds great, right? But how can you guarantee you’ll actually see results and improvement? Commitment. At Invictus, we only work with people who commit to their results. Why? Because we’ll give our best to encourage and champion you but it is up to you to do the work. Yes, we’ll be there to help and assist you but…

We can’t do the push-ups for you.

We can’t make healthy food choices for you.

We can’t force you to do anything you’re not ready to do for yourself.

We CAN support you. Whether it’s through our Small Group In-Person sessions (under 18 per session), LIVE-Stream training (from wherever you are), Invictus Online program (on-demand and on-the-go), Private Coaching (1:1), or Semi-Private Coaching (1:4), we have options to meet you right where you are and help you get to where you want to go.

Three Benefits To Training In A Private Martial Arts Academy

Invictus Martial Arts is a private, by-appointment-only martial arts academy on N. Lake Creek Parkway in NW Austin (Williamson County). Unlike many of the other martial arts training facilities in the area, Invictus is NOT open to the general public but rather designed for those receiving training with our certified martial arts coaches. This kind of arrangement works well for SO many reasons.

Here are three benefits to training in a private martial arts academy like Invictus Martial Arts.

Shared Commitment

If your session overlaps with that of another coach and client (like our small group or semi-private options), you’ll be sharing the space with like-minded individuals. When people choose a personal martial arts coach, they tend to want to get the most bang for their buck. Unlike a public studio, where people may blend in with the crowd, spend 45 minutes with very little direct, personalized input on how to make progress, or wait unnecessarily long to use the equipment, the goal in a private martial arts academy setting is an efficient, effective training session – every time.

Better Training

One of the perks of working with a personal martial arts coach is a customized training session that takes into consideration your goals and continued development. Your martial arts coach will keep you on task, moving from skill to skill, and pushing you in a manner that challenges you without putting you at risk. You’ll also learn proper technique, further reducing your chances of injury and maximizing your efficiency and control.

A More Personal Experience

Training in a private setting facilitates familiarity, making it easy to build a good rapport and camaraderie with both your martial arts coach and anyone else who happens to be training at the same time. These kinds of supportive bonds reinforce accountability, which is so important for making progress toward your martial arts goals.

A private, by-appointment-only martial arts academy, like Invictus Martial Arts in NW Austin (Williamson County), strikes the perfect balance of results and community. It offers a cozy social environment while still promoting hard work. Whether LIVE-Streaming online or In-Person, if you’re ready to learn more then contact us today for a FREE Private Consultation.

Family Martial Arts

Building Stronger Families Through Martial Arts

Experts agree that family-based fitness has a greater likelihood of becoming lifelong fitness. In fact, our experience shows that training as a family in the martial arts has countless physical, cognitive, and social benefits and is an excellent way to build stronger families.

Here are three ways martial arts builds strong families:

Establish Lifelong Fitness Habits

According to SHAPE America it is recommended that children get 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Learning to be physically active is a habit that must be developed. Children learn best through observation, and establishing strong fitness habits during early childhood can yield positive results for years to come. Experience shows that regularly training in the martial arts not only increases physical strength and promotes good heart health, but it can also improve sleep, and boost your immune system.

Increase Family Bonding

Many times, the family is a child’s first example of what a team can look like. Training in the martial arts as a family is a great team-building activity where parents and children can work together towards the common goal of becoming black belts. Along with making progress in their training together, families also experience a sense of growth and accomplishment that will build stronger bonds and promote closer relationship with one another.

Build A Happier Family

Experts agree that families who train in the martial arts develop improved confidence and self-esteem. Moreover, martial arts training can also lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression by raising serotonin levels. Finally, by training together, families also learn important problem-solving skills, including conflict resolution. Developing these skills creates an all around stronger and happier family. And who doesn’t want that?

Virtual Learning

Virtual Learning And Martial Arts

Traditionally, learning martial arts has been limited to In-Person classes.  Fortunately, interactive technologies now allow us to share the martial arts experience with a broader audience through virtual learning.

Our experience shows that children and adults can consistently advance in the development of their martial arts skills through virtual learning. In fact, experts agree that a person training remotely can reach up to 80% proficiency in any given technique.

Here are four benefits of virtual learning through martial arts:

1. Develop Critical Thinking Skills

Virtual training requires thoughtful attention to detail and technique. Without the potential distraction of a bag or partner, virtual learning trains a person like you to focus on their own individual body mechanics to develop better precision of movement.

2. Promote Physical, Mental, And Emotional Health

We can all agree that personal wellness is an important part of life. And training in the martial arts is a great way to get in shape. Understandably, not everyone’s lifestyle allows them to consistently attend scheduled In-Person classes. However, there are several at-home fitness options that a person like you can participate in on your own schedule. Now, these options typically don’t deliver in the way of consistent motivation and noticeable progress.  Fortunately, virtual martial arts training delivers the convenience of training remotely while also promoting personal progress through belt rank progression.

3. Encourage A Sense Of Community And Connection

Remotely training with other like-minded individuals always helps build a sense of friendship and community. Of course, when In-Person social interactions are limited, virtual training with others provides an excellent opportunity to develop relationships with people who are pursuing similar goals.

4. Demonstrate The Importance Of Persevering Through Obstacles

The unexpected happens in life and it often has the potential to change everything we’ve come to accept as normal including how we train in the martial arts. However, virtual training provides an opportunity to embrace these challenges and confidently move forward with our personal development while avoiding potential setbacks.

You’re invited to CONTACT US today to experience how training with Invictus Martial Arts can personally benefit you.

Is It Safe To Go To The Gym

Is It Safe To Go To The Gym?

At Invictus Martial Arts, we know that you want to feel your best and everyone knows that going to the gym is always an essential part of any healthy lifestyle. But in order to do that, you need to feel confident that you’ve clearly made the right choice to get training again. The problem is there’s so much contradicting information out there regarding the safety of training at a gym which makes you feel confused and unsure of what information is even reliable.

We believe investing in your health always includes a commitment to exercise well-being. Fortunately, fitness training has been not only scientifically proven to reduce stress AND boost your immune system but making an educated decision about returning to the gym really shouldn’t be that hard. And we understand your concerns about keeping proper spacing, hand hygiene, etc, which is why we’ve taken bold action steps to ensure that you and your family will always have wellness-supported, enjoyable training sessions here at Invictus Martial Arts.

Here’s how we do it…

Smart Spacing

Committed to going above and beyond the minimum guidelines, we at Invictus Martial Arts have smartly spaced dots on our training mats that maintain a distance of at least 2 meters (6’ 6”). As an added benefit, all our group training sessions leverage a small group training philosophy allowing up to 18 pre-registered participants per session. If you’re like us you’ll love how easily you can now train together while maintaining proper distance and getting in a great workout!

Fresh Air Supply

Pushing the boundaries of what martial arts training can be, Invictus Martial Arts utilizes a transformative fresh air supply system giving you confidence and peace of mind. During typical use, our fresh air supply system lets you benefit from hospital-grade MERV-14 air filters to prevent the transfer of bacteria and infectious diseases removing particles as small as 1/300 the diameter of human hair. To us, wellness isn’t just a phase or passing cliche, it’s the air we breathe.

Health-Conscious Flooring

Now, this may not be relevant to you but members at Invictus Martial Arts always love knowing that even their training floor helps keep them healthy. Our Dollamur Swain Hybrid mats aren’t just great for balance and safety at an enormous 1-1/2” thick, they’re also fantastic for supporting your healthy lifestyle. From Dollamur:

Instead of utilizing an antimicrobial additive in the vinyl surface of our sport mats, Dollamur infuses a biocidal additive which is registered with the EPA under FIFRA. Rather than focusing only on treating surface microbes, biocides protect Dollamur sports mats by eliminating potential microorganisms within the vinyl surface itself.

So, we invite you to CONTACT US today to re-ignite your passion for fitness by training In-Person with Invictus Martial Arts. And in the meantime, CLICK THIS LINK to discover all the ways we’re invested in supporting your wellness so you can stop worrying if it’s safe to workout and simply enjoy getting stronger and more skilled at Invictus Martial Arts.

Health Is A Superpower

Health Is A Superpower

With so much focus in recent months on building strong immune systems and prioritizing well-being, experts agree that one of the BEST ways to bolster your body’s natural defenses is by investing in your health through nutrition and fitness.

So, when a person finally decides to take ownership of their own wellness, all kinds of amazing things always begin to happen! Here are three for you to consider:

Reduced Risk of Chronic Illness

Chronic conditions like the following are some of the largest contributors to underlying health issues:

Obesity (33.8% of all Americans)

Heart disease (the leading cause of death in the US at 23%)

And even some forms of cancer (21.3% of all US deaths)

Of course, these days there’s no shortage of diet fads and health tips. But it is definitely possible for a person like you to invest in your health by hiring a nutritionist/dietician, seeking the medical advice of your doctor, or spending 30-minutes a day learning about all the great ways to empower your body through a balanced approach to food.

Simply put, food is fuel.

But remember: the standard American diet will give you the standard American diseases. So, if you want a better output you need better input.

Luckily, it’s easier today than it’s ever been to adopt a healthy lifestyle as long as a person like you is willing to make a personal investment to take the initiative and begin now.

Upgraded Stress Response

It’s no secret that being active reduces stress.

According to Harvard Medical School, “Exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators.”

When you move more, you feel better.

Fortunately, it’s easy to get in GREAT shape with martial arts training.

Not only will this help you reduce stress but it will also give you a fantastic sense of accomplishment. When a person like you advances in your martial arts training, you quickly learn new skills increasing your confidence, developing laser-like focus, and encouraging good habit formation.

Improved Mental Health

Mental health expert, Stephanie Gilbert, writes, “Mental health heavily influences our quality of life. So it makes sense that mental health, just like physical health, needs to be taken care of and maintained. And one way that it can be maintained is through finding a sense of community.”

So, as you read this, imagine one of your greatest accomplishments. Perhaps it was getting that grade you really wanted or perhaps it was that promotion you worked really hard for or perhaps it was finishing at the top in the competition. You might agree that you didn’t do any of it alone. There was always someone who believed in you, helping you.

That is the power of belonging to a community of like-minded people!

You more easily find purpose and meaning in a community of like-minded people because you know that you are supported to accomplish your goals… which always feels really good. In fact, experience shows that people who invest in martial arts at Invictus always transform their goals into results.

So, how will you take charge of activating your superpowers?

Perhaps for you, it will be making that smart food choice at your next meal or maybe deciding to move more this next week or even practicing daily mindfulness. Whatever you choose, your inner superpower is just waiting to be unleashed!

So why not BEGIN TODAY?
